- Ethereum’s Hegota Upgrade is scheduled for late 2026, following the next Glamsterdam Upgrade.
- The upgrade will address validator-level censorship resistance, ensuring that any validator on the ETH network cannot censor or sideline your transaction for any reason.
- Although controversial among some users, the upgrade will provide three key enhancements, especially the inclusion of transactions.
- Although these changes (FOCIL) were supposed to be part of the Glamsterdam Upgrade, they were delayed due to debates among ETH developers.
No Arbitrary Filtering of Transactions by Validators
Ethereum’s Hegota Upgrade proposes to separate the proposer and the creator of the blocks. Previously, a single validator could propose as well as add the block on the blockchain, and the fastest one to do so won the reward. However, this led to increased exclusion of transactions which were either less profitable or did not satisfy the validator requirements (even if they satisfied the ETH network requirements. The auction-based mechanism was actually responsible for incentivizing validators to do this.
The result was delayed blocks where mostly small transactions suffered. We too saw this happen when last year the price of gas crashed in Ethereum, and the block processing time was reduced to a few seconds, and the gas fee was less than $0.1. Despite this happening, we had to face a delay of 15 minutes before our transaction was processed.
This was solved by FOCIL, a part of the much larger Hegota Upgrade.
Vitalik Buterin says that Hegota promises time-bound processing of all transactions on Ethereum.
This (FOCIL) gives us guaranteed rapid inclusion, meaning almost certainly within 1-2 slots, of any such tx, even in an adversarial environment.
What to Expect After Hegota?
After the upgrade, transactions will no longer be delayed by fee priority. They will still occur when the network is busy, which is also being addressed by improving Ethereum’s scalability.
Transactions will be included within the next 1-2 available slots.
What is the Hegota Upgrade?
Hegota Upgrade is a major upgrade towards fixing validator-level censorship in Ethereum. Despite being shielded from external centralized censorship, validators used to selectively prioritize more profitable transactions, often delaying smaller ones due to fee differences. As a result, small ones used to suffer.
It is also called a stepping stone for Quantum Resistance. After the upgrade, post-quantum signing protocols (e.g., FALCON) will not require significant gas for signing transactions.
