Who was James Howells? The Early Bitcoin Miner Who Lost It All.

James Howells is a Welsh IT engineer & early Bitcoin miner by background. He started mining Bitcoin in early 2009 when the coin had almost no value at all. This made him one of the very first miners on the entire Bitcoin network. They describe him as one of the only five active miners during that early period. He stored the private key to his wallet on an old laptop hard drive. Many people searching for who lost those $800 million Bitcoin in landfill find his name right away. This detail turned into the source of the most expensive accident in crypto history.

How The Hard Drive Ended Up In A Landfill?

The story of who lost $800 million Bitcoin in the landfill begins in August 2013. James was clearing out his home & accidentally put the wrong drive in a trash bag. His then partner took that bag to the Docksway landfill site in Newport in Wales. It contained the private key to a wallet holding eight thousand Bitcoin. The drive looked exactly like a blank one he planned to discard that day. This simple mix up created a loss worth nearly eight hundred million dollars by today. We now know the coins remain on the blockchain fully visible & totally out of reach.

Every Attempt James Made To Recover The Drive

James Howells spent over a decade trying to recover his lost Bitcoin hard drive. He offered Newport City Council more than seventy million dollars in 2021 for permission to dig. The council refused every single time citing environmental & legal concerns. They also argued that the excavation could release dangerous gases & toxic waste materials. James took the council to court & the High Court dismissed his case in January 2025. The Court of Appeal also refused to grant his case permission in March 2025. This legal defeat frustrated many who hoped the story of who lost $800 million Bitcoin in landfill would end well.

What was The Latest Bold Plan?

James Howells made a fresh move in July 2025 with a bold new proposal. He submitted a formal offer of twenty five million pounds to purchase part of the landfill. This section called the Area 2 is where he believes the hard drive lies buried deep below. He also offered to take over post closure environmental costs over the next four decades. The Newport City Council responded by asking him to first pay legal fees from past cases. They gave no further reply to his formal purchase proposal at the time of writing.

A New Cryptocurrency Born From The Loss

James Howells announced a surprising new plan after losing all the legal & purchase efforts. He now plans to tokenize his eight thousand Bitcoin wallet into a brand new digital coin. The project is called the Ceiniog Coin & is built as a Bitcoin layer two token. This coin aims to create a fast payment focused environment backed by his buried Bitcoin value. It would let people trade on the value of those eight thousand inaccessible coins. The entertainment company the LEBUL also secured exclusive rights to turn this saga into a full documentary series. This means the story of who lost $800 million Bitcoin in the landfill reaches even more people now.

Conclusion

But who lost $800 million Bitcoins in a landfill? It was James Howells, a Welsh IT engineer and early Bitcoin miner. He threw away the wrong hard drive in August 2013 & has tried to get it back since then. The courts turned down all his legal ways and the council refused his offer to buy the landfill.
