Toncoin’s age has two answers: the original project was founded in 2018, making it about eight years old in 2026, while its current, community-driven version, The Open Network (TON), has been operating since 2020, making it about six years old. This is the chronology of its early development by Telegram and its later re-invention as The Open Network.

The Brief Response to the Age of Toncoin

Assuming that you count the age of Toncoin in its initial stages of development, the project is eight years old in 2026. But, to find the age of the existing, decentralized blockchain that is currently underway, called The Open Network (TON), it has been operating in its community-driven version for about six years. Its first testnet was launched in early 2019, and in 2020 and 2021, it was transitioned to the TON Foundation and renamed to Toncoin.

Historical Timeline and Detailed Context

Toncoin started its trip in early 2018, when the creators of the Telegram messaging application, Pavel and Nikolai Durov, declared the Telegram Open Network. The project was so ambitious that it raised more than 1.7 billion dollars in one of the biggest private sales of cryptocurrencies ever. The native token was supposed to be named Gram at that time. By 2019, the team had created most of the core infrastructure and introduced the initial test network. The project, however, suffered a huge setback when the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) came in. The SEC claimed that the token sale was an unregistered securities offering. Telegram officially pulled out of the project in May 2020, after a protracted legal battle. This is where most people would think that the original project was over, but the open-source code enabled a second act to happen.

The Rebirth and Rebranding of the Community

After Telegram left, a team of independent developers took the existing code and proceeded with the work under a new name: The Open Network. The project was finally delivered to the TON Foundation in 2021. This was the time when the token was rebranded to Gram to Toncoin. This is the most significant period in the history of this community. In late 2021, Pavel Durov officially supported the new iteration of the project, and by 2023, Telegram started to incorporate Toncoin back into its interface as its official web3 infrastructure. Nowadays, Toncoin is considered to be one of the highest quality cryptocurrencies with profound use in the social media environment, which proves that its age is not so much about a single launch date but a continuous development over almost ten years.
