The Pyth Network is considered Chainlink’s primary competitor in the oracle market. While Chainlink remains the leader in total value secured, Pyth has gained significant ground by specializing in low-latency financial data for decentralized finance applications.
The Main Rival: Pyth Network
The main rival to Chainlink has been Pyth Network, which specialises in delivering quality financial data. While Chainlink is an all-purpose oracle that provides any data to the blockchain (e.g., weather data, verifiable randomness, etc), Pyth is almost exclusively focused on the sub-second data required for today’s cryptocurrency trading.
Pyth is a pull-based oracle. This means that the data is only updated on the blockchain when it is requested. This is significantly cheaper for developers than Chainlink’s push-based oracle, which uses time-based or price-based updates to feeds. Pyth has been the market leader in 2024 and 2025 within Solana and has quickly expanded its usage to dozens of other chains, becoming the main alternative for developers seeking efficiency and speed.
Other Market Leaders and Specialised Oracles
There are several other protocols competing in the oracle market, aside from Pyth Network.
- RedStone: The RedStone protocol has become increasingly popular owing to its modular structure. This structure enables the user to select from a variety of data delivery channels, resulting in minimal gas costs.
- RedStone is popular with new Layer 2 chains.
- API3: API3 is different in that it offers a direct connection between smart contracts and the data source (first-party oracles). It removes the need for third-party node operators, which API3 says makes it more secure and transparent.
- Band Protocol: Band Protocol is built on the Cosmos SDK and is interoperable. It was the first alternative, and is still available for Cosmos projects.
- Chronicle Protocol: Chronicle began as an internal oracle for MakerDAO, but is now available to the public, having secured billions of dollars in assets over time.
The Industry and Oracle Market
The advantage of Chainlink is its first-mover status and services. It is now more than an oracle; it is a platform. Its Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol (CCIP) has become the protocol of choice for institutional tokenization of assets, and is being used by consortia like SWIFT and banks.
The oracle wars are no longer about the number of feeds. It’s now a battle of strategies. The market now has the “Generalist” and the “Specialist” low-latency approaches, with Chainlink and Pyth, respectively. With more real-world assets (RWAs) being tokenised, we are likely to see more competition in the market as institutions look for the most secure and compliant platform.
